If you’re like most homeowners, you’re proud of your home and its contents. You probably worked very hard to collect nice clothes, furniture, electronics, décor, and dishware, and you worked hard to keep them nice too. But if you wrap up and pack up your whole home for a move, those belongings will suddenly be the hands of strangers and the backs of trucks. Before your next move, it’s very important to hire a trustworthy, experienced moving company that will treat your worldly possessions like their own.
Follow these steps to make sure your movers are licensed, insured, and ready to give you a fair, straightforward rate.
Browse online reviews & ask friends for recommendations. Before you start requesting estimates or seriously considering moving companies, use the Internet and word-of-mouth referrals to narrow down your pool of candidates. Look into companies that friends, neighbors, and co-workers have used for moves of similar distance, and make lists of the best-reviewed companies on multiple review websites. Don’t forget to ask your real estate agent for advice, too. As you research each company, make sure they’ve been in business for at least ten years.
Check license numbers & verify insurance. Now, you should have at least five or six moving companies that come highly recommended and offer the services you need. Before you start the process of getting an estimate, double-check each company to make sure their licenses are valid and up-to-date. Every moving company should clearly identify its Department of Transportation (DOT) and motor carrier (MC) license numbers, which you can look up yourself in an online database. Make sure the numbers are attached to valid licenses with the same name and contact information.
Schedule in-home estimates, and make sure they’re binding. After you have a handful of companies that seem trustworthy, start scheduling in-home estimates to get solid quotes from each of them. Don’t trust over-the-phone estimates, online estimates, or non-binding estimates under any circumstances. Until your moving company sees the stuff they’re going to move (and the space they’ll need to navigate), they cannot give you an accurate estimate for weight and other factors.
Ask important questions about their techniques. Your estimate is also an opportunity to ask questions about a moving company’s policies, rates, experience, and more. For example, do charges vary according to day of the week? Will fuel charges be added later? Make sure you understand exactly what your binding estimate means, then ask specific questions about the move itself. Will the moving company charge you for overtime? How many movers will they send? How do they wrap and protect fragile furniture and electronics? This interview may reveal that the cheapest company isn’t necessarily the best one for you.
Read your bill of lading carefully. Now, you should have an estimate that outshines the others and a promising moving company to hire. After you call, you’ll receive a Bill of Lading, which is your contract with the moving company. It’s okay to hesitate before you sign, because you want to read this document very carefully. Check the rates, insurance protection, pickup and delivery dates and locations, minimum and maximum charge, and more before committing to the move.
