If you enjoy decorating for the holidays, you'll love the festive splendor of the Herlihy Christmas House. This private family home in Mansfield is adorned with thousands of lights, hundreds of Santas, trains, villages, Disney-themed displays, and over 25 decorated Christmas trees. This private collection of holiday decorations has been cultivated for decades, with some pieces dating back more than 50 years!
Each decoration is hand-placed by family members and volunteers who carry on the tradition that began all the way back in 1987. It only takes one visit to the Herlihy Christmas House to see why it's has become a favorite tradition among our REALTORS® and Mansfield residents of all ages.
The original owner of the home, Paul Herlihy, had a passion for holiday decorating that began in the bedroom of his childhood home. This passion continued to grow year after year. With the help of his wife, Sharon, and daughter, Terri, Paul opened his home to the public for the first time by joining the Mansfield Symphony Guild's holiday parade of homes.
The following year, the Herlihy's opened their home again, this time to collect donations for the Richland County Dog Pound's spay-neuter program. From here, the event became an annual tradition, with the family using gifts to support other local charitable organizations.
Unfortunately, the lights dimmed in 1999, when Paul passed away following a long battle with cancer. The family opened the house again in 2001, then took a hiatus.
Paul's daughter Terri has since purchased the family home, moved in, and is ready to carry on the tradition once again. The house will open this year from 6 to 9 pm December 6th through the 9th. They're also accepting reservations for private group tours between December 1st and 19th.
The family is requesting a donation of $1 per person, with all proceeds going to Toy Time and A Special Wish of North Central Ohio.
The Herlihy Christmas House is located at 170 West Second Street, just 1/4 mile west of Downtown Mansfield. Since this is a private home, it is not handicapped-accessible. Please also note that public restrooms are not available.
Bus tours can be arranged by contacting Jodie Puster at jpuster@mansfieldtourism.com. Future events will occur on alternate years, so don't wait. You don't want to miss your chance to experience this festive piece of Mansfield's history.
