Did you know that every human being on the planet has what it takes to be a hero? No matter how strong or fast you are, you can save the lives of countless strangers with the noble act of donating blood. This process is virtually painless and is so fast that you could complete it during your lunch break. If you'd like to donate blood, June offers the perfect opportunity to bleed for a worthy cause. This year's World Blood Donor Day falls on June 14th, and our REALTORS® invite you to learn more about this fantastic event.
In celebration and recognition of these everyday heroes, the World Health Organization created World Blood Donor Day in 2004. What started as an attempt to raise awareness for the growing demand for clean, safe blood has blossomed into an annual event that acknowledges the many selfless individuals who donate blood while also spreading education about the many crucial benefits of each blood donation provides.
Imagine if in one hour, you could save three lives by doing nothing more than sitting on an air-conditioned bus catching up on social media. It's not too good to be true! A single blood donation can save up to three people's lives. Believe it or not, the world is in short supply of viable blood donations. Countless individuals around the world depend on blood donations to restore their health. How are blood donations used?
Did you know that every two seconds, a patient in the United States needs a blood donation? Unfortunately, blood cannot be manufactured artificially; it must come voluntarily from a human donor. What makes matters worse is that over 60 percent of the population is ineligible to donate blood. Voluntary, unpaid blood donations actually make up 80-90 percent of the blood supply in nearly 80 of the world's countries. It's no exaggeration to say that every single blood donation plays a vital role in preserving life around the world.
Who can donate blood? Donors must be aged 17 or older, with many states allowing 16 year-olds the opportunity to donate with parental permission. These individuals can donate once every 8 to 16 weeks which is the timeframe needed for the body to replenish the red blood cells.
Donating blood is a small token of your time and energy that gives the gift of life to those who need it most. If you're eligible and interested in donating, we encourage you to visit one of these donation sites around Mansfield throughout the month of June.
