New Homeowners: Countdown to Moving Day

You've scouted Mansfield homes for sale, found the perfect match, and closed the deal. Now it's time to plan for moving day! There are so many details to cover when preparing for a move, so having a detailed plan will help you reduce stress while making sure that you cover every key step. Our REALTORS® have you covered, with our countdown of the final 30 days before moving day.

One Month Before Moving

  • Create a Supply List and Gather Moving Supplies
Packing is so much easier when you have all the necessary supplies. You'll need shipping tape, scissors, plenty of labels, permanent markers, packing materials, and of course a ton of cardboard boxes.

  • Reserve a Moving Truck and Plan for Storage
If you're handling the move yourself, now is the time to reserve your moving truck and plan ahead for storage if needed. When choosing a moving truck, it's better to have a little too much space than to find out on moving day that your truck isn't quite big enough.

  • Start Packing Nonessential Items
Start the packing process by gathering nonessential items that you won't need before you move, and cleaning out storage spaces. When packing, make sure to label each box so you know the contents, and flag any boxes that you'll need to be able to unpack quickly after you move.

Three Weeks Before Moving

  • Talk About Toys and Start Packing Children's Items
If you're moving with children, packing toys can be one of the hardest steps. Make sure that your kids know they're toys will be coming with them, and set aside some of their favorite toys to pack at the last minute.

  • Continue Packing Everyday Items
As you get closer to moving day, continue to pack and organize as much as possible. Pack any everyday items that you can get by without until your move, and start planning for how you will pack essential items in the final two weeks.

Two Weeks Before Moving

  • Finish Packing the Essentials
With less than two weeks to go, you should be ready to pack most of the remaining items in your old home, including kitchen items. This is also a good time to confirm that your boxes are labeled correctly and clearly.

  • Plan for Transitional Days While Moving
Make your move less stressful by packing everything that you'll need for the first few days into a suitcase, including toiletries, clothes, and temporary kitchenware.

  • Start Cleaning Empty Rooms
As you pack more and more items, your home will really start to open up for cleaning. Take advantage of that open space by cleaning empty rooms and storage spaces as you go, so there will be less work at the end.

Moving Week

  • Clean the Home from Top to Bottom
With your move around the corner, it's time to give your old home a good scrubbing and clean any areas that you haven't already covered. Pay special attention to areas of the home that are lesser used, since these can be easy to overlook.

  • Secure Your Old Home and Return Keys
Before you make your move, make sure that your old home has been secured with all windows and doors locked. Set up an opportunity to return your keys, and any other important items that you need to leave behind.
