Home Projects for Sellers - Haring Realty

Are you getting your house ready to sell? Making it look its best doesn't have to mean expensive, time-consuming updates and renovations. Here are five easy projects our real estate agents recommend. All of them are things you can do yourself, and that will make a substantial difference in how well your house shows.

  1. Showcase the front door. First impressions are important. Curb appeal is great, but it's when a potential buyer walks up to the front door that they start paying attention. Make your front door shine by power washing to get rid of dust, dirt, and cobwebs. Add some finishing touches by laying out a new welcome mat, replacing old, unsightly house numbers with something more attractive and modern, and adding a strategically placed planter or two.

  2. Clean from the ground up. First impressions are important inside as well. First things first: Clean the entire house, starting from the ground up. Buyers tend to pay a lot of attention to what's under their feet, focusing on flooring first. Polish your hardwood, deep clean the grout between tiles, and steam clean your carpets. Earn bonus points by vacuuming your carpets right before a showing so that there will be fresh vacuum lines. Make sure you clean the tops of baseboards, get all the cobwebs out of the corners, and clean any dirty fingerprints or smudges, even if you don't take the time to wash the walls.

  3. Let there be light! Sunny, airy rooms are one of the fastest ways to attract prospective buyers, so your next project should be letting in as much sunlight as possible. Even if you've hung insulating curtains to try to save on utilities, take those down now and replace with airy sheers that will let in plenty of light. For showings after dark, be sure to have plenty of light in every room. Turn all of the lights on and walk through the house with a critical eye, looking for any problem areas where you could put another lamp or two. Make sure the house will appear bright and open to a stranger walking through.

  4. Maximize storage by minimizing what's in it. One thing everyone wants to see from Mansfield and Ashland homes for sale is plenty of storage. Whether your house has ample storage or not, the best way to highlight your storage is actually to have less in it. As you decide what to put into storage in preparation for staging your home, don't forget to clear out your closets. A closet that is only partially full will emphasize how much more space it has to offer.

  5. Paint to impress. If your interior paint is old and needs freshening, painting is a relatively easy task that you can do yourself. As you choose paint colors, steer clear of white (too harsh) and bright colors (too risky). Remember, your goal is to present a home where virtually anyone can imagine themselves living there. Choose a stylish neutral, such as beige or grey, and paint the walls while leaving the trim white to provide contrast.

If you're like most people, you don't want to spend a lot of time, effort, or money to get your house ready for sale. Fortunately, there's a lot you can do to improve how it looks with just a few simple touches. Are you ready to sell, or curious what more you can do to show your house at its best? Contact us today, and we'll set you up with an agent who can advise you throughout the process of selling your home.
