It doesn't take long after the ink dries on the paperwork that your thoughts will turn toward all the things you have to do when you move into your new home. Our REALTORS® know you'll have a lot on your mind, and this simple list can help you stay focused on some of the things you need to do.
- Dust Off the Dust Mop
It's a good idea to pack your cleaning supplies at the back of your moving truck. This will make it easier to get to the mops, brooms, trash bags, etc., you'll want to use before you move in. Cleaning an empty house is a lot easier before you start unpacking.
- Inspect the Home
Give the home a good inspection before you move in. Walk through and look for signs of water damage, including mold and stains, pest infestations, drafts, insulation levels, etc. You may not have noticed these during your walk-through, and it's best to find them early and fix them fast.
- Change the Locks
It's also a good idea to contact a locksmith before you arrive and have them meet you at your new home on move-in day. While you may have the former owner's keys, you don't know whom they gave keys to over the years, and this gives you a bit of added security. This is also a good time to install a home security system or smart home system that you can use to monitor the home from anywhere you may find yourself.
- Change Your Address
Make sure that you get your address changed with the DMV and other relevant authorities. You will also want to update your bank accounts, credit accounts, etc., so that your mail doesn't go to your old address.
- Test the Appliances
Put the ceiling fans, air conditioner, furnace, hot water heater, dishwasher, stove, oven, etc., through their paces. Make sure they are functioning properly and note any faults or deficiencies you need to repair.
- Check the Pipes
This is crucial as you may have exposed hot water pipes that need insulation or sprinkler systems that have a leak. The sooner you find them, the sooner you can hire a plumber to perform the necessary repairs.
- Check for Energy-Efficient Rebates
If you have an old air conditioner in your new home, there may be incentives you can use to upgrade to modern, energy-efficient systems. This also applies to windows, furnaces, heat pumps, etc.
- Start a Maintenance Checklist
Identify what systems you have and the required maintenance schedule of the tasks you need to perform. This will help you stay on top of home maintenance and ensure your appliances, HVAC systems, irrigation systems, etc., stay in top condition.
- Put Together an Emergency Plan
Make sure you know where your fire alarms, fire extinguishers, circuit boxes, sump pumps, gas shut-off valve, etc., are located. Run a couple of emergency drills, so everyone in the family knows how to quickly evacuate the home in an emergency.
- Explore the Area!
Even if you know the area, it's a good idea to go out and explore. Meet the neighbors, find the best bike paths, discover the nearest parks, seek out the closest shopping, etc. The more you know about the neighborhood, the faster it will start to feel like home.
