From Apartment to First Home - Haring Realty

Moving from an apartment into your first home is exciting. But, it's also a bit nerve-wracking as you ponder plans for all the additional space you now have at your disposal. Our REALTORS® understand how you feel, and there are plenty of things you can do to keep your mind focused on the tasks ahead. The following tips will help you tie a bow on all the details so that you can enjoy settling into your new home.

  • Take care of the apartment first. Make sure to reread your lease and notify your landlord of your intention to move within the specified timeframe. You will want to confirm your responsibilities, when you'll get your deposit back, etc. You should also take care of any final rent payments, utility bills, and don't forget to file a change-of-address form with the post office.

  • Start packing up. It's always a good idea to pack all the things you don't need right now away so they're out of the way. Packing a box at a time makes the task a little easier and less stressful. It also makes it easier to purge items you no longer need as you move on to one of the Mansfield or Ashland homes for sale you have your eye on. While you're packing, determine whether you'll hire a mover or do it yourself. If you plan to hire a mover, thoroughly research companies in the area and get solid quotes from those you feel most comfortable using.

  • Schedule an inspection. If there's anything a home inspector points out during an inspection, make sure to fix it before moving in. It's also a good time to paint the walls or complete minor renovations. It's easier to do these tasks without furniture, pets, kids, and boxes in the way.

  • Set up utilities. Contact the utility companies before you move and schedule service to start before your planned move-in day. This will ensure the water, heat, electricity, etc., are ready to go when you walk through the door.

  • Make a "to-do" list. Your new home means that you have many new chores. You'll need to take care of the landscaping and maintenance of the home. It's best to create a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual schedule that includes everything you need to do. Include everything from cleaning the plumbing fixtures to scheduling termite inspections and HVAC maintenance. If possible, it's a good idea to ask the previous owner what schedule they followed and what companies and services they used.

  • Call the locksmith. Always change the locks when you move into a new home. This is the best way to ensure your safety. Schedule a locksmith to change the locks on or before your move-in day.

  • Start a shopping list. You'll need (and want!) new curtains, furniture, storage containers, etc., when you buy a new home. Start a list and make a budget for everything you'll need to settle into the new space and make it your own.

  • Pack a "First Day Kit." Make sure it has toilet paper, towels, shower curtains, light bulbs, some snacks, and cleaning supplies. Make sure to put this in your car or in the very back of the moving van.
