Adding a Kitchen Backsplash - Homeowners - Haring Realty

Are you considering upgrading your kitchen with tile? This durable, attractive, and easy-to-clean material not only adds functionality to your kitchen but also improves the overall look. Here are a few tips from our REALTORS® to help you decide on the right tile for your kitchen.

  • Why Upgrade with Tile
Tile used to be relatively pricey for what most people could afford. These days, however, you'll find tile in the kitchens of many Bucyrus homes for sale. While modern manufacturing and technology have made tile more affordable than previous generations, it's still a durable, easy-to-clean, high-quality choice that will look good for years to come.

  • Types of Tile Available
Tile comes in a ton of different sizes, shapes, materials, and colors, making it a versatile option for whatever look you're going for in your kitchen:

    • Ceramic
Ceramic tile is affordable and versatile. You'll find it in a variety of colors and sizes. Ceramic subway tiles are a popular choice, and glazed ceramic is also easy to clean, perfect if you're upgrading a kitchen on a budget. Spring for stain-resistant grout to make your backsplash even easier to care for.
    • Porcelain
Porcelain and ceramic may seem similar, but porcelain tile is a different beast. It's stronger and more durable (which, incidentally, means it's harder to cut), and varied manufacturing techniques can make it look like many other materials, such as wood or brick.
    • Glass
Glass tiles are beautiful and perfect for a backsplash. Glass tiles are stain resistant, and since they're reflective and light-catching, they can make a small space look bigger and more eye-catching.
    • Natural Stone
Marble, granite, and other types of stone make attractive tiles but used to be avoided because of how much maintenance they needed. Stone needs to be sealed to prevent staining, and it used to be that sealants only lasted about a year. Modern sealant can last over 15 years or more, so stone is a much more viable option than it used to be.
    • Metal
If you're looking for a backsplash that will create a bold statement in your kitchen, metal tiles might just be the thing. You can find them in tin, copper, and aluminum, and with smooth, polished surfaces, or stamped designs, metal tiles can look either industrial or elegant.

  • The Perfect Design
As you're making choices about what material and style of tile you want, be sure to keep in mind the overall look you're trying to achieve in your kitchen. Do you want a simple backsplash, or are you creating a focal point by tiling the entire wall behind your range, right up to the cupboards or even the ceiling? Your overall plans for your kitchen may dictate the type of tile you choose.
