Spring is a season for cleaning and freshening up the house after all the "inside days" of winter, but sometimes it's hard to figure out where to start, not to mention how to find the time for it around your work schedule. Here is a basic spring cleaning schedule from our REALTORS®, laid out in a month's worth of weekends to make use of your free time.
- Weekend #1: Tidy Up
First things first: Spend some time tidying and decluttering. Put everything away that's out of place, find places for things that don't have one, and fill a box with items to donate. Be ruthless and honest about what you don't need hanging around, taking up space. While making the rounds, carry a duster and eliminate obvious dust. Don't forget about frequently overlooked areas, such as the tops of light fixtures and fans. If you plan to sell your home soon, consider storing some of your belongings while your home is being shown.
- Weekend #2: The Kitchen
Ignore the clutter from the week and dive right into the kitchen on the second weekend! Declutter the counters and kitchen table if needed but get right to work otherwise. Wipe down all surfaces, including the counter, cabinets, walls, stove top, and windows. Scrub the microwave and the sink, and deodorize the garbage disposal with baking soda or lemon or orange peels. This is also your chance to do tasks you don't do very often, such as wiping out the fridge's interior and cleaning the oven. Mop the floors last so you don't dirty them while cleaning.
- Weekend #3: Bathrooms
Bathrooms are small and typically quick to clean, but if you have several bathrooms in your home, you'll likely still need to devote an entire weekend to the job. Start by wiping down all surfaces, including the counter, walls, cabinets, and floor. Scrub the sink, tile, tub, and toilet using a product for killing mildew or whitening grout as needed. Finish by disinfecting frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs and light switches.
- Weekend #4: Living areas
With any luck, the decluttering you did the first weekend will have stuck, and you'll only have a little tidying up before getting started in each room. Run the duster around the room again first, sweep if you have hardwood floors, and vacuum carpets and upholstery. Clean the windows and wipe down the walls. This is also a good time to wash throw blankets and bedding.
- Bonus Weekend: Closets
If you feel like your closets need special attention and can devote a fifth weekend to it, this one's for you. First, pick a closet, pull everything out, and go through it. Have a big box standing by for things that don't fit, or you no longer wear. Once you've decided what to keep, assess your available closet space and decide if you like your current organization system or want to change it. Custom organization systems are available for purchase and can boost your home's value and appeal, as seen in Ashland homes for sale. Once you've settled on an organization system, wipe down and vacuum out the closet and put everything back, organizing as you go.
