Keeping Wildlife Away - Homeowners - Haring Realty

There's nothing worse than having your home overrun by pests. Wildlife like squirrels or raccoons are nice to look at from afar but can cause problems if they start to invade your space. Our REALTORS® can help you find the perfect home for your needs, but how can you keep from sharing it with unwanted animal guests? Here are a few tips to keep critters at bay.

  • Identify the Problem
What kinds of animals are you most likely to find in your area? Talk to your local wildlife agency and ask neighbors if they've had any pest problems. Once you know what you're dealing with, you'll have a better idea of how to repel them.

  • Be Careful of Bird Feeders
You'd love to have birds in your yard, but your bird feeder can also attract other unwanted animals. Hang your feeder in a tree, as high as possible, from a branch that squirrels will have difficulty reaching. Consider adding a squirrel baffle—a metal ring that goes around the feeder, keeping squirrels and other critters out while still allowing your feathered friends in.

  • Be Careful of Water
Any water out in the open will attract local wildlife, particularly if there aren't many other sources nearby. If you have a birdbath, keep it out of reach of non-flying wildlife, like the feeder. If you have pets, keep their water bowls inside, so they can stay hydrated, but other animals won't come snooping around. Also, ensure any traditionally damp or humid places in your home, particularly your attic and basement, are well-ventilated and moisture-free. And if you find leaks or standing water in or around your home, deal with them quickly before they attract company.

  • Keep Garbage Secure
Raccoons, in particular, love to scavenge for garbage. Your old food scraps will attract them for miles. Ensure any outdoor garbage cans have tightly sealed lids that can only be opened by human hands and won't fall off if the can is knocked over.

  • Cover Openings
Be aware of places where animals might gain entry to your home, such as through your chimney, vents, exhaust fan openings, or window wells. Make sure these are covered to keep unwanted critters out.

  • Use Preventative Landscaping
Some Bucyrus homes for sale are more attractive to critters than others, but a few preventative measures can help get rid of them. Keep tree branches trimmed and make sure they're at least six feet from your roof so squirrels don't have a direct path from their home to yours. Likewise, clear away any leaves or other debris that wildlife might hide in. And if you have fruit trees, gather the fruit as soon as it's ripe, as rotting fruit will attract all sorts of creatures.

  • Get Regular Maintenance
Keeping your home in good shape will help keep animals out. Have your roof inspected annually for leaks. Likewise, look for things like loose mortar, weatherstripping, or other holes or openings around your basement foundation or near windows that might let animals in. If you have any holes in window or door screens, repair them immediately.

  • Call a Professional
If you do find yourself with a pest problem, call an animal removal company rather than try to deal with it yourself. They'll help you trap and remove unwanted animals safely and humanely.

With just a few proactive measures, you can make sure you and your family are the only occupants of your new home. Contact us if you're ready to move into the house of your dreams.
