Maximizing HVAC Efficiency - Mansfield, OH | Haring Realty

After our REALTORS® help you find your new home, there are a variety of tasks to be done, from basic cleaning to changing the locks. Duct cleaning often gets forgotten, but it's essential if you want your HVAC system to run efficiently. Why is duct cleaning important, and how do you do it? Here's what you need to know.

Why Clean Your Ducts

Duct cleaning is particularly important when you've just bought a new home. Certain lifestyle aspects of the previous owners can cause dust buildup in the home's ductwork, which aren't always readily visible when looking at Mansfield homes for sale. For instance, if they had pets, smoked, or didn't regularly clean the house, dust and debris may have accumulated in the ducts over time.

Those contaminants then end up in your home's air, as well as getting into your HVAC system. Dust buildup can cause breathing problems, especially for those in your household with allergies or asthma. It can also keep your HVAC system from running efficiently and even cause damage to it over time.

Duct cleaning is even more important if you're buying a home that's just been built or heavily remodeled. A significant amount of drywall, sawdust, and other contaminants permeate the air throughout construction and settle in your ducts.

How to Clean Your Ducts

A professional duct cleaning is a good idea if your home has just been built or remodeled. However, this is a very involved and expensive procedure; in most other cases, it's unnecessary. You can give your ducts a basic cleaning to keep dust and contaminants at bay. Start by removing the covers from your home's vents and registers. Put them in the sink, clean them with warm water and a mild dish detergent, and then let them dry.

While they're drying, take an electrostatic duster with a long handle and clean the inside of your ducts. Reach the duster in as far as it will go and clean on all sides. You can also use the hose attachment of a vacuum cleaner. Once you're done, replace the vent covers over their respective spots.

You might also consider installing a UV cleaner. Ultraviolet light kills organic matter on contact, preventing mold and mildew from growing inside your ducts. You should also change your air filter regularly. When the filter gets clogged, dust and debris build up in your ducts, restrict airflow, and keep your system from running efficiently.

How Often to Clean Your Ducts

Your vent covers should be wiped down every couple of months and given a thorough cleaning at least once a year. Your actual ducts don't need as much attention. A basic DIY cleaning can be done every three to five years.

If you want a full, professional, deep clean of your ducts, then every six to eight years is plenty. In fact, many experts say you can do it as needed. If there's visible mold growth in or around your ducts or a musty smell throughout your home, get a professional duct cleaning.

With proper maintenance, you can keep your home clean and healthy for years to come. Contact us if you're ready to make Mansfield your new home, and we'll help you find a house that meets your needs.
