Fall is a beautiful season. Leaves on the trees turn yellow and orange. The air becomes cool and crisp, and there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy treats like apple cider and pumpkin spice muffins. As fall rolls in, it is also wise to start preparing your home for winter. Our REALTORS® suggest completing the following weatherproofing tasks as a part of your fall home maintenance.
- Clean Your Gutters
This is a task you should do every fall, then again in the spring. Gutters help ensure water drains from your roof properly, but they can only do that if they're clean. Put on some gloves, reach into the gutter, and pull out any gunk or debris you find. Then, rinse the gutter out with a bucket of water.
If your gutters are way up high and you're uncomfortable on a ladder, consider hiring someone to complete this task.
- Replace Damaged Weatherstripping
Weatherstripping is the rubberized, gasket-type material along the edges of doors and windows. Sometimes, it can crack and start peeling away. If your weatherstripping is damaged, replacing it before winter will prevent cool air from leaking into your home.
To replace damaged weatherstripping, first remove the screws holding it in place. Pull the old weather stripping off. Cut a new piece of weatherstripping to the same length. Have someone else hold it in place while you put in the screws.
- Look Over Your Roof
Take a good look at your roof, and note any lifted shingles, peeling flashing, or missing shingles. These issues only tend to worsen in the winter and can lead to leaks. Contact a roofer to fix them before the weather gets any colder.
- Seal Your Driveway
Sealing your driveway in the fall will help protect it against ice and water damage. It will also help form a barrier between the driveway material and any de-icing agent you may apply.
You can find roll-on driveway sealers at most home improvement stores. Follow the directions on the can to apply the product. You'll want to wait for a clear forecast before applying the sealer; rain keeps it from setting.
- Rope Caulk Your Basement Windows
Basement windows often become leaky in the winter, especially if snow piles up against them. Rope caulk can fix this. You simply peel a strip off the roll and use your fingers to press it into the gap between the window and the frame. When spring comes, you can peel the rope caulk off again if desired.
- Re-mulch Your Gardens
Before winter comes, make sure you apply another thin layer of mulch to your garden beds. This will protect your plants' roots as the weather grows colder. It will also help keep the soil moist so they come back strong and vibrant next spring.
- Check Your Handrails
When it gets icy outside, you'll want your handrails to be strong and sturdy. Give each railing and handrail a wiggle. You'll need to secure it if it moves more than a little. This might mean tightening the screws holding it to the base. Or, if the material around the screws has degraded, you can add some new screws.
Also, take this opportunity to sand down any splinters on your handrails. You don't want a sliver on a chilly winter day.
