Top Houseplants to Boost Mood and Decor in Winter | Haring Realty

Chase away the winter blues with plant therapy. Create an indoor garden, or just bring in a nice assortment of house plants to lift your mood. Here are some of the houseplants our REALTORS® recommend for boosting your mood, improving indoor air quality, and generally making your home's interior look nicer this winter.

With National Houseplant Appreciation Day coming up on Jan. 10, it's the perfect time to get your indoor garden going so you're ready to celebrate. These plants are known for prospering indoors despite lower light levels.

  1. Jade Plant
The Jade Plant can tolerate low light and a temperature range of 65-75 degrees F in the day and 55 degrees F at night. Keep Jade Plants away from drafty windows where they might get too cold, as it can cause them to drop their leaves. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings; brown spots on leaves indicate you may be overwatering. Fertilize this plant sparingly.

  2. Pothos
Pothos is easy to grow and can endure chillier temperatures in the home, as well as low light. It's one of the more forgiving houseplants, so every indoor garden should have a Pothos specimen. The leaves should be abundant and will grow in a pleasing, trailing habit, ideal for a shelf or window sill. Pothos is easy to grow, but don't overwater, or it will turn yellow.

  3. Cyclamen Persicum
Cyclamen is a fabulous plant to add to your indoor garden. You can make a mini indoor garden from different colors of blooming cyclamen. There's red, pink, white, and a near lavender color of cyclamen, so mix and match. Cyclamen doesn't mind cooler temperatures, so feel free to place it near a drafty window or a chilly entryway so you can have a spot of color.

  4. Dwarf Citrus
Although Dwarf Citrus flourishes outdoors in the summer, it's fine indoors in the winter. Enjoy the delicious citrusy smells of dwarf oranges, lemons, and kumquats. They will thrive in cooler rooms (65 degrees F or so), but they will do best in front of a south-facing window. Remove any suckers that sprout below the graft union. Pinch back tips of new growth to keep a nice, rounded shape.

  5. Sansevieria
This easy-to-grow plant will do well in strong or weak sunlight. The plant also tolerates fluctuations in temperature, like the heater going on and off. Just do not overwater, or the roots will rot.
  6. Dracaena Marginate
This familiar houseplant, also known as the Dragon Tree, is one of the easiest indoor plants to grow. Its long, sword-like leaves make it look more like a tree than a foliage plant. Dracaenas tolerate low temperatures, dry air, and low light.
