With the scarcity of homes for sale, you may think it isn't important to deep clean, but if you consider that it can make a difference of $3,500 or more, you may change your mind. A cleaning service will likely charge between $200 and $400. That is a greater return on investment than many other home improvements. Our REALTORS® have a few hints to make the process less overwhelming.
- Start by Decluttering
When you move, you will have to pack all of your personal possessions anyway, so why not jumpstart the process by removing those things you don't use? Take the photos off the walls, the trophies off the shelves, and remove any other knickknacks. Eliminate all those things you have planned to donate or toss out. Don't fall into the trap of storing boxes in a spare room or the closets. It's as important to show them to their best advantage as much as the rest of the house. Rent a storage room and get them out of the way. The house will look much bigger!
- Make the Kitchen Sparkle
Start by clearing out the gadgets. Put all small appliances out of sight to maximize the appearance of counter space. Clean the refrigerator, stove, and microwave, inside and out. Don't forget the dishwasher, as it can harbor unpleasant odors. Vinegar and baking soda will make short work of odor both there and from the garbage disposal. Look at the photos of other Bucyrus homes for sale and select the most attractive kitchens. Take note of what catches your eye and incorporate it into your kitchen. Once it is as clean as you can make it, including windows and floors, stage it with a touch of color from a bowl of fruit or fresh flowers.
- Attack the Bathroom Next
Scrub the toilet to remove hard water rings and stains. Use a deodorizer in the tank, but choose a pleasant scent. Pay attention to the base of the toilet where it meets the floor, as this is a place that collects dirt and debris. Every surface should be shining clean with no soap scum or trash anywhere. If you use a hamper in the bathroom, ensure it's empty before showing the house.
- Windows, Floors, Walls, and Doors
The windows, curtains, and drapes should be clean throughout the house. The hard floors should be scrubbed clean, with special attention to corners and baseboards. Steam clean the carpets. Make sure the walls are clean and free of fingerprints or scrapes. If they can't be washed clean, consider new paint. Make sure doors are clean and handles are polished. Replace hardware as needed.
- Living Room, Dens, and Bedrooms
Before you photograph or show your home, be sure each room is picked up and free of laundry, junk mail, or any of the other little things that clutter our houses daily. Make sure beds are made and everything is in its place. Don't be afraid to add a pop of color here and there with a bright pillow or comfy throw. Open the drapes and turn on the lights for a bright welcome.
We often talk about staging to increase the price of the home, but if that is not an investment you wish to make, deep cleaning is the next best thing. Before you put the house on the market, contact us for more helpful information on maximizing the profit on your sale.
